Sign up for a hosted account and issue your first license from the console, with no server to run.
License Server — issue, verify and track software licenses, self-hosted or hosted.
License Server issues license keys to your customers, tells your application whether a key is valid, and tracks which machines have activated it. It can also gate your release downloads behind a valid license, so the same key that unlocks your software controls who can download it.
It has two halves. You manage licenses in a web console: issue a license, find a customer's, change its terms, revoke it, free a seat. Your application talks to the API, usually through the official JavaScript SDK, to activate and verify keys and check for updates. Nothing requires the SDK: any language can call the API directly, and scripts can use the admin API to issue licenses in bulk.
Hosted is a managed account: sign up and issue licenses from the console. Free for up to 50 active licenses.
Self-hosted is the same software in a container on your own infrastructure, under license, with a 30-day evaluation. Your database, your backups, your upgrade schedule.
Both run the same code and the same API, so nothing you build has to change if you move between them. Self-hosted or hosted? is the long version of that decision.
One person writes this software and this documentation. If something here is wrong, unclear, or missing, say so — it gets read.
